AAUW members played a key role in the 1960s to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 1971 AAUW began an ongoing campaign for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. In addition, AAUW played a key role in the passage of Title IX.
A member of AAUW, Congresswoman Patsy Mink of Hawaii, was co-author (with Senator Birch Bayh of Indiana) and a driving force behind the passage of Title IX.
Part of the Educational Amendments of 1972, President Nixon signed Title IX into law on June 23, 1972 and it became effective on July 1, 1972.
After her death in 2002, Title IX was renamed the Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.
