“Back to school” means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, but for girls heading back to class, it can also be a stark reminder that we are still living in a culture predominated by the Male Gaze. School dress codes are often heavily biased against female students; but they can be blatantly discriminating against students of color, students whose religion has its own dress requirements, and transgender students.
Title IX has become increasingly used to protect those students, as well as students facing unfair policies regarding dress, sexual harassment, bullying, and gender identity.
