In March 2019, AAUW CA was invited to participate at the State Capital in an Oversight Hearing of the Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism & Internet Media, into the current state of gender equality in education. The hearing was entitled, “Federal Title IX and the California Sex Equity in Education Laws Examined: The current state of gender equality in education.”
Alicia Hetman, AAUW CA Title IX Coordinator, prepared and presented testimony at the hearing on behalf of our organization.
Alicia’s testimony included an introduction to and overview of Title IX and comments on the intersection, overlap and gaps between the Federal Title IX and the California Education Code Sex Equity in Education Act and other laws in fulfilling their shared goal of achieving equal access in all aspects of education regardless of gender.
Other invitees included representatives from the state Attorney General’s Office, as well as academic and legal experts in gender equity in education and sports. You can read Alicia’s testimony here.
